Insights & perspectives

Questions worth asking.

Brief perspectives on the decisions facing school and trust leaders.

Financial sustainability

What does a balanced
budget really tell us?

A balanced annual budget is a starting point. The assumptions and recurring commitments determine what comes next.

Read perspective

Leaders need to understand what is recurring, what is temporary and what remains uncertain. A one-off underspend may provide flexibility without creating lasting capacity for a permanent appointment. Reviewing the medium-term consequences makes the decision clearer.

Shared services

Start with what
schools need.

Service design begins with demand, responsibilities and capacity. Those questions shape what should be shared.

Read perspective

Before changing a structure, examine where work is duplicated, where specialist knowledge is missing and where local relationships matter. Agree how service quality and costs will be assessed. Different functions may need different arrangements.

Leadership development

From understanding figures
to exercising judgement.

Financial leadership develops through the questions leaders ask and the decisions they can explain.

Read perspective

A useful development exercise asks a leader to interpret a forecast, test its assumptions, compare resource options and explain a recommendation. Applied learning makes the connection between financial information, educational priorities and accountable decisions.

Whether you need a clearer financial direction, stronger teams or additional leadership capacity, an initial conversation can establish where support would be useful.
